Flatbed Tarps For Flatbed Trailers

Flatbed tarps are commonly used to create a protection barrier around cargo being transported on flatbed trailers to ensure the cargo arrives damage-free at the next destination. Transporting cargo on open-air trailers without flatbed tarps risks damage or destruction. This can lead to costly insurance claims, upset customers, frustration, stress, and ultimately lost time.

Flatbed tarps can be placed over the cargo you are securing and become secured to the flatbed trailer to provide ultimate protection to your cargo from start to finish. Some common ways cargo becomes damaged on flatbed trailers include rain, snow, road debris, grime, direct sunlight, and even mold or mildew caused by moisture.

The Different Types Of Flatbed Tarps

The different types of flatbed tarps include lumber tarps, steel tarps, steel coil tarps, parachute tarps, and ripstop tarps used to protect cargo on flatbed trailers. Some key differences between flatbed tarps include the material they are made from, the overall weight of the tarp, operator preference, tarp dimensions, drop size, or specific application-designed tarps.

Most of our flatbed tarps use a 14-oz light-duty or 18-oz heavy-duty PVC-coated material that is cold-crack rated to -40° C/F. We also have Ripstop material made from a grid pattern that helps to prevent tearing and is known for added durability and resistance to wear and tear. Ripstop material also helps prevent tarps that are cut from traveling the entire length of the tarp, making for an easier repair.

Lumber Tarps

Lumber tarps are ideal for oddly sized and shaped cargo such as lumber construction materials, building supplies, lumber, hay, or even general cargo. Lumber tarps are made in either 14 oz light duty or 18 oz heavy duty PVC coated material that is cold crack rated to -40° C/F. Lumber tarps are also made with a waterproof coating and a rear drop to ensure protection from all angles.

PVC-coated material is the go-to material for lumber tarps because of its protective properties against rain, snow, strong winds, gusts, moisture, mildew, mold, and direct sunlight. We have a wide range of different sizes of lumber tarps including our largest 24’ x 27’ with an 8’ x 8’ drop that weighs 121 lbs and offers ultimate protection from our 18 oz heavy duty material.

Light Duty Lumber Tarps

Light-duty lumber tarps are made with 14 oz PVC-coated material and are designed to offer great protection and waterproofing without added weight. Due to the tarps being lighter in weight they provide better maneuverability and are extremely cost effective making them an ideal choice for drivers and fleet owners.

One reason light-duty lumber tarps are preferred by solo drivers and an aging workforce is that the overall weight of the tarp is much lighter, which makes installing it onto the flatbed trailer much easier and less straining. This is especially true for those making multiple short-range deliveries, as lightweight lumber tarps are much quicker to install and get back on the road.

If you have any questions about our 14 oz lightweight lumber tarps you can reach our experts at 800-444-0956 or by using our Contact Us page at the top of the website if you prefer email communications. Heavy Duty Lumber Tarps

18 oz lumber tarps on the other hand are heavier-duty and heavier in physical weight. However, one of the biggest advantages of purchasing the 18 oz heavy-duty lumber tarps is the added durability and protection to your load. The heavier-duty PVC material provides a greater resistance to wear and tear which helps to increase the product’s lifespan and is entirely waterproof against rain, snow, and ice.

Heavy Duty Lumber Tarps are made with ultimate protection and durability in mind and can weigh upwards of 121 lbs per tarp. The heaviest-duty lumber tarp we sell is our 24’ x 27’ Lumber Tarp with 8’ Drops made with our 18 oz heavy-duty PVC-coated material. This quality flatbed tarp is ideal for those who are OTR or on long hauls to ensure that your cargo remains safe with ultimate peace of mind.

Steel Tarps

Steel tarps are commonly used to transport cargo such as steel, raw metal, metal machinery, and more. They are made from either a 14-oz light-duty or an 18-oz heavy-duty PVC-coated material, which is waterproof and provides excellent tear resistance. Metal products exposed to moisture or road salt could put the metal materials at risk of rusting which could cause non-repairable damage.

Steel tarps help prevent metal materials from rusting or becoming damaged to help prevent damage and reduce lost time. Steel tarps are made with grommets at the bottom of the tarp to help secure the tarp to the trailer using rubber tarp straps.

These tarps are made with two rows of D-rings spaced every 24 inches to ensure you can secure the tarp from all angles and keep your cargo protected. If you have any questions, need a quote, or are interested in our large quantity discount pricing you can reach us at 800-444-0956 to get started today.

Steel Coil Tarps

Steel coil tarps are similar to steel tarps but are specifically made for transporting steel coils. These flatbed tarps have a unique design that accommodates the round shape of coils and provides full coverage. Steel coil tarps are available in 6 foot x 6 foot x 6 foot and come in optional colors of Red or Black tarpaulin.

Made from 18 oz heavy-duty PVC coated material which provides excellent waterproofing and protection to your metal coils from outside weather conditions and debris. 18 oz heavy-duty PVC-coated material is the heaviest-duty tarpaulin available and is designed to offer ultimate protection, durability, and tear resistance.

Ripstop Flatbed Tarps

Ripstop tarps are made from materials with a grid pattern that helps to prevent tearing. This added tear resistance helps to prevent a cut from traveling down the entire length of the tarp. This combination also helps to make repairing the flatbed tarp extremely easy by using a tarp repair kit.

Ripstop tarps are made with a waterproof 15 oz center section and water-resistant 11.2 oz material on the sides. Despite being 15 oz material at the strongest portion of the flatbed tarp they offer more durability than our 18 oz heavy-duty PVC-coated tarpaulin. Ripstop material is considered light in weight but offers heavy-duty protection.

Ripstop tarps offer more durability than parachute tarps, as they are made with thinner and weaker materials that last a limited time. Ripstop fabric can also protect the cargo from rain, snow, moisture, ultraviolet light, mold, mildew, and more.
