The Different Types of Tie Down Straps

Ratchet Tie Down Straps

Ratchet Straps are the most popular tie down straps commonly used for their heavy-duty strength and durability. Ratchet Straps use Ratchet Hardware that flows in one direction to tighten the strap to the desired strength.

As the ratchet hardware mechanism flows in one direction once tightened the webbing is locked in place until you reach your next destination. Once you arrive you can release the hardware by pulling up on the lever release in the middle of the ratchet hardware and opening it until it is flat.

Ratchet Straps are available in numerous widths of webbing ranging from 1 inch, 2 inch, 3 inch, and 4 inches wide. We also have several different styles, finishes, and hardware options so that your custom tie-down straps are made to your exact cargo application needs.

Retractable Ratchet Straps

Retractable Ratchet Straps are a great alternative tie down strap compared to traditional ratchet straps. Retractable ratchet straps have a ratchet mechanism that allows the extra webbing to retract back into the spool of webbing automatically.

Available in 1-inch heavy-duty webbing with the heaviest-duty working load limit rating in the retractable ratchet strap industry. This product is sold in Red, Gray, Blue, and Black at one great price.

The retractable ratchet design is excellent for securing cargo. Attach the short end of the retractable to your anchor point, pull out the required length of webbing to reach the other end, and with a button, remove the excess slack and tighten the strap into place in seconds. Cam Buckle Tie Down Straps & Lashing Straps

Cam Buckle Straps are another type of tie down straps commonly used for dry van trailers and enclosed trailers in combination with e-track rails. Cam Buckle Straps can also be called Lashing Straps around the cargo control industry.

Cam buckle straps are tightened using cargo buckles designed to open and allow webbing to be threaded to the desired strength using hand strength.

Once you have removed the excess slack and they are tightened into place release the cam buckle hardware to hold the webbing and you are ready to hit the road. Using hand strength to tighten cam buckle straps is ideal for more sensitive cargo, antiques, and valuable cargo that is expensive to replace or often not replaceable.

Cam Buckle Straps are made in 1-inch and 2-inch sizes and can be assembled with a wide range of end fitting hardware such as hook hardware, e-track fittings, or endless loop used to bundle cargo together or to hold cargo on a pallet during transit.

Cam Buckle Lashing Straps are ideal for applications such as securing motorcycles, boxes, and pallets, and are used by professional movers to prevent damaging the customer’s personal belongings.

Endless Loop Tie Down Straps

Endless Straps are ideal for bundling cargo together to save space or keeping a pallet of boxes secured to prevent tipping over and causing potential injuries to the driver when unloading or damage to the cargo.

Endless Loops are also commonly used for hunting tree stand applications or to secure hunting gear during outdoor adventures. Available in either 1-inch, 2-inch, or 4-inch webbing sizes and ratchet or cam buckle hardware options.

For light-duty securement applications, we recommend our cam buckle hardware due to the easy-to-use design and to prevent potential overtightening damage. For heavier-duty securement applications, we recommend using our 2-inch or 4-inch ratchet straps which provide a higher safe working load limit ratings per strap.

E Track Tie Down Straps for E Track Rails

E Track Straps are one of the most popular types of tie-down straps and are designed to work with e-track rail systems installed inside enclosed trailers, dry van trailers, and moving vans. E-track rails provide a wide selection of anchor points to secure your cargo from the perfect angle and maximize the available space.

E Track Straps come in either ratchet hardware or cam buckle hardware to tighten the straps into place and commonly are made in the industry standard lengths of 12-foot, 16-foot, and 20-foot. The industry standard lengths of e-track straps are color coded with 12-foot being Yellow, Gray for 16-foot, and Blue for 20-foot length. We also can custom-make e-track straps at any custom length needed for your application or branding needs.

Winch Straps for Flatbed Trailers

Winch Straps are designed for use on flatbed trailers and are tightened into place using installed winches along the rub rails of the flatbed trailer. The most commonly used sizes are 2-inch, 3-inch, and 4-inch wide winch straps due to the heavier-duty strength load capacities.

Winch straps are the go-to choice for professional flatbed drivers and operators as the cost per strap is much lower when compared to alternative ratchet straps. As these straps are tightened using winches they do not include heavy ratchet hardware which helps to reduce the price per strap for huge savings potential.

Winch straps are commonly made with either flat hooks, wire hooks (double j hooks), or d rings depending on personal preference and how the flatbed trailer is set up. Our heaviest-duty 4-inch flatbed straps with wire hooks feature a 5,670 lbs safe working load limit rating per strap.

What Should I Do with Excess Tie-Down Webbing? – The best way to get rid of excess tie-down webbing after your strap is tightened to the desired strength is to wrap the tie-down webbing around the tie-down strap to avoid friction from rubbing against the excess webbing that could cause friction burns. Friction burns occur when tie-down webbing rubs against a sharp edge, corner, or movement against cargo causing burns to weaken tie-down webbing. Excess Tie Down webbing can also cause tie-down hardware to jam if you are not careful when tightening hardware such as a Ratchet.

How Many Tie Down Straps Do I Need? – In general you should always have AT LEAST four different tie-down securement points to avoid load shifts from cornering, a quick stop, a sudden lane change, or a fast acceleration. Load shifts can happen often and are one of the number one ways to break tie-down straps as extra weight can stretch the webbing too far causing it to fail.

How Do I Find What My Tie Down Straps Are Safely Rated For? – You can find out what your tie-down straps are rated for by looking for the tag on each one of your tie-down straps. If your straps do not have a label or a tag on the strap showing you the weight limitations it is often illegal to be on the road as well as extremely dangerous to do so. Working Load Limit (WLL) tags should always be present on tie-down straps as it show you what your straps can safely secure without the risk of straps snapping or your cargo coming unsecured during transportation.

WARNING: Do not ever exceed the working load limit of any strap at any time. Remember the assembly is only as strong as its weakest link and should be inspected before every use.
