What Is Tie Down Webbing?

Depending on the application that it is being used for it can be made from polyester webbing that stretches very little or nylon webbing that is designed to stretch for applications such as lifting or recovery towing applications.

The Different Types of Tie Down Webbing Blends Trucking Depot

Polyester Webbing For Cargo Control Applications

Polyester webbing is used in applications such as cargo control webbing blends that stretch the least as excess stretching could cause the cargo to become unsecured while going down the road. Polyester is the most commonly used webbing blend for cargo control applications and stretches an average of 7 percent.

Polyester can also provide excellent protection against direct sunlight, moisture, mold, and mildew which are some of the leading causes of damage to tie-down webbing in cargo control applications. Polyester webbing rolls come in various widths and colors and are commonly used to manufacture tie-down straps or DIY projects.

Four common widths of polyester webbing used for cargo control applications are 1 inch, 2 inches, 3 inches, and 4 inches wide. The main difference between these four widths is the strength they can be safely rated. 1-inch webbing is commonly used for lighter-duty applications whereas 4 inches is used for heavy hauling on flatbed trailers.

At Trucking Depot, we sell rolls of polyester tie-down webbing in various colors and widths ranging from 1 inch to 4 inches wide with 300 feet of webbing per roll. Due to the manufacturing process, these 300 feet rolls of webbing may contain several splices.

If you are looking for rolls of webbing without splices contact us at 800-444-0956 so that we can verify we have enough rolls without splices in stock to complete your order.

4-inch ratchet straps should never be used for around-the-house securement applications as the ratchet hardware weighs over 8 lbs. They are used for heavy-duty securement applications on open-air flatbed trailers for some of the heaviest cargo on the road.

Nylon Webbing For Recovery Towing Applications

Nylon webbing is used during recovery towing applications as excess stretching can be extremely beneficial as it can reduce the chances of damage to the vehicle. This is also one of the reasons you should never attempt to use a ratchet strap for a recovery towing application as it could cause damage to the vehicle or injuries to those nearby.

How To Inspect Tie Down Webbing For Damage

There are a couple of common ways in which tie-down webbing becomes damaged. One of these factors is damage from direct sunlight which can be found on tie-down webbing from discoloration in the webbing that may look faded or not the original color.

Another common way tie-down webbing becomes damaged is from cuts on sharp edges which can be avoided using a Cordura protective sleeve or corner protectors. Corner protectors can help provide a barrier between the sharp edge and the webbing to keep the webbing in good shape and free of cuts, tears, or burns from friction.

The last and most uncommon way that polyester tie-down webbing becomes damaged is from mold or mildew. If you spot mold or mildew on your tie-down webbing you should immediately stop using it as it is unsafe. Mold and mildew can cause the tie-down webbing to weaken underneath the original breaking strength rating making your tie-down strap unsafe to use.
