This ratchet with snap hook is used mostly for securing cars and motorcycles. It helps keeps the distance close for those tight tie down areas. A ratchet consists of a round gear with teeth, and a spring-loaded pawl that engages the teeth. When the teeth are moving forward, the pawl easily slides up and over the edges of the teeth. When the teeth move in the backward direction, the pawl will catch against the sloped edge of the tooth, locking it and preventing any further motion.
